Winter is here. Is your home ready?
The mornings are getting colder, the evenings are drawing in and the heating is finally starting to do its bit again.
It’s lovely to come home to a warm house, turn on the kettle and just settle down for the evening. A lot less lovely when your boiler decides it wants to do something else.
Unfortunately, heating problems tend to manifest when you actually need the system.
The good news is that a bit of preparation at this stage can go a long way to keeping you ahead of the game and giving you greater peace of mind over the winter months.
At DTS Plumbing & Heating we think looking after your home shouldn’t be complicated. So here’s our practical guide to getting your heating winter ready.
1. Book Your Annual Boiler Service
Your boiler will be working hard to keep your home warm and your hot water coming. It’s absolutely essential that it is regularly serviced.
An annual boiler service allows a qualified heating engineer to inspect the appliance, check its operation and safety and look out for any signs of wear or potential problems.
It can also help you to assess the condition of your boiler and whether anything requires your attention.
Why get it done before winter?
As it’s far more convenient to find a problem when the weather’s still fairly mild than to find yourself without heating during a cold snap.
Servicing won’t guarantee that your boiler will never break down, but it is an absolutely vital element of responsible boiler care.
And if your boiler hasn’t been serviced in a while then now is a good time to get it back on track.
2. Keep an Eye on Your Boiler Pressure
Have you checked your boiler pressure recently?
Many sealed systems will be running at about 1 to 1.5 bar when cold (although again the correct range will depend on the boiler and the heating system). Always check your manufacturer’s instructions.
If the pressure is too low your boiler won’t work properly.
You may be able to top it up by following the instructions for your particular boiler. If in any doubt, get advice from a qualified engineer.
Here’s the key point: if the pressure continues to drop then don’t just keep refilling it.
Repeated pressure loss will point to some kind of problem (a leak for instance) with the system.
If you’re regularly checking the gauge and finding the pressure has dropped again then it’s time to get it looked at.
3. Are your radiators heating properly?
When you turn the heating on you want your radiators to heat up properly.
But what if one is cold while the others are working perfectly?
There are a number of possible reasons.
- Cold at the top: air being trapped in the radiator could be the reason it’s not heating up properly.
- Cold at the bottom: sludge or debris may be the problem.
- Cold all over: could be a valve, a circulation problem or something else entirely with the heating system.
- Slow to heat up: could be down to circulation, system balancing or the heating controls.
These are useful clues, but of course none of them in themselves give you a definite diagnosis.
And don’t automatically assume a cold radiator needs replacing. The solution can often be far simpler.
If you’re unsure what is causing the problem, getting it checked can help you understand what’s needed.
4. Don’t Ignore Strange Boiler Noises
Your boiler doesn’t need to be completely silent really, but if it’s making a new or unusual noise then that’s something you should take notice of.
Banging, whistling, gurgling or a persistent rattling can all have a number of causes some of which will require the attention of a professional.
It’s tempting to turn the TV up and just pretend you haven’t heard anything.
But your boiler probably won’t appreciate you ignoring it.
If it starts making odd noises then note when they occur and get a qualified heating engineer to have a look.
The earlier you understand what’s causing the noise the better placed you are to decide what to do.
If you smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide then don’t treat it as a simple maintenance issue. Follow the relevant emergency guidance immediately.
5. Is Your Hot Water Playing Up?
One minute your shower is lovely and warm. The next, you’re wondering whether you’ve accidentally booked yourself onto an Arctic expedition.
If your shower keeps fluctuating between hot and cold, several things could be responsible.
These include a problem with the shower itself, changes in water pressure or flow, water being used elsewhere on the property, or an issue with the hot water system.
If the problem happens regularly, don’t simply put up with it.
A qualified engineer can help identify the cause and explain the options for putting it right.
The same applies if your hot water is unreliable or your boiler is struggling to provide it.
6. Repair or Replace? Get Honest Advice
If your boiler has started playing up, you might be wondering whether it’s time for a replacement.
The answer isn’t always straightforward.
A repair may be the sensible option if the problem is relatively minor and your boiler is otherwise in good condition.
Replacement may be worth considering if your boiler is older, increasingly unreliable, inefficient or becoming expensive to repair.
The decision depends on the appliance’s condition, the fault, the cost of repairs and your household’s needs.
At DTS, we believe you should understand your options before making a decision.
Not every boiler problem means you need a new boiler.
Sometimes a repair is all that’s needed. Sometimes replacement makes better long-term sense. The important thing is getting clear, honest advice.

8. A Few More Ways to Prepare Your Home
While your boiler deserves plenty of attention, there are a few other simple things worth checking as the weather gets colder.
✔ Check your heating controls. Make sure your thermostat and timer are set as you expect.
✔ Keep an eye out for leaks. Look for signs of water around visible pipes, valves and radiators.
✔ Don’t ignore small changes. Unusual noises, unreliable heating and recurring pressure problems are worth investigating.
✔ Know where your stopcock is. If you have a significant water leak, knowing how to shut off your water supply can help limit damage.
✔ Avoid unnecessary DIY repairs. If you’re unsure what a heating or plumbing problem involves, get professional advice rather than risking further damage.
A few checks can help you spot issues early, but they don’t replace professional servicing or repairs when needed.
