Saving you Money on Gas and Water Bills!

In this blog, we have compiled some top tips for saving money on your gas and water bills. Some of our customers have reported that since we have done anything from fixing a dripping tap to installing a new boiler, they have seen a reduction in their bills.

3 steps to saving you money!

Check (your bills)
Switch (your energy provider)
Save (money)

How to Save Money on Gas Bills

  • By installing and correctly using a programmer, room thermostat and thermostatic valves (TRVs) on your radiators, you you could save up to £60 on your energy bills in a year! Some thermostats can be controlled by your phone, so turning the heating off has never been easier!
  • Make sure your heating programme is correct, so that it’s on when you need it and off when you’re out.
  • Similarly, be thermostat aware. If you need to turn the heating up you only need to turn it up by a couple of degrees. Hiking it up it won’t give you a short term boost of heat, it will start to heat your whole house to a tropical temperature
  • Higher bills can be caused by faulty or inefficient appliances. If in doubt arrange a gas safety check with a Gas Safe registered engineer. At DTS Plumbing, we can also advise on the efficiency of your boiler and approximately how much money a new one could save you.
  • If your bill has been estimated, be sure to read your meter and submit the actual reading to your supplier
  • Ask your gas engineer to check the levels of central heating protector in the system. If your central heating water is treated correctly, it not only improves energy efficiency, it also reduces fuel wastage and ensures system longevity. This in turn saves you money and reduces your carbon footprint.
  • Make sure your home is well insulated, including windows, doors and loft insulation. This will keep the house warmer, giving you less reason to hike up the heating!
  • The least common, but most dangerous reason would be a gas leak. If you smell gas turn off the gas supply, open your windows, leave the house if you can and call 0800 111 999 immediately.

How to Save Money on Water Bills

  • By taking a 5 minute shower instead of a bath you could save between 25 and 60 litres of water each time!
  • Fix dripping taps; a tap that’s dripping more than twice a minute can waste over 4 litres per week. After we replaced a dripping tap, one of our customers was thrilled to see the reduction in her water bill.
  • Install a water butt in your garden. Make the most of the British rain we have instead of using a hose pipe to water the plants!
  • If you’re thinking of replacing your toilet choose an ultra low flow one to reduce the amount of water in each flush. If you notice your toilet starting to run for longer or when it isn’t supposed to have them replaced!
  • Contrary to popular belief a dishwasher uses far less water than handwashing the same amount of dirty pots! Make sure you fill the dishwasher to its optimum amount to save the water running when it doesn’t need to. If you don’t have many pots to wash, many dishwashers have a “half load” setting.
  • Other smaller changes we would also recommend are: turn off the tap whilst cleaning your teeth and always use the most water efficient programme on your washing machine!

We hope these tips help to save money on your gas and water bills!

As always, thank you for reading.  Stay safe!
