All of our new boilers are Hydrogen Ready

Over the next few years, the prevalence of low-carbon heating technologies will rise significantly, bringing significant changes in how the UK’s buildings are heated. Hydrogen is one of the key energy sources forming part of this conversation.

All new boilers that DTS install are ready for a 20% Hydrogen blend, which will help cut your household carbon usage and save you money on your Gas bill year on year.

A 20% Hydrogen blend has the potential to save C0₂e of 120 million tonnes and £8 billion cumulautively by 2050.

Why hydrogen?

Hydrogen is a key technology in facilitating the UK’s pathway to achieving its net zero goal. It offers several benefits, which give it great potential as we transition to a low-carbon economy.

These include:

  • A green fuel source – when burned, hydrogen creates just water vapour and heat and produces no CO₂ emissions
  • Easy to store – hydrogen can be compressed, held in salt caverns or liquified, making it easy to store for use
  • Energy potential – hydrogen contains a large amount of energy and gives comparable high efficiencies to condensing natural gas boilers today
  • Utilising the existing infrastructure – there is potential that hydrogen can utilise and be delivered using the existing gas network infrastructure, making it one of the more cost-effective routes to decarbonising heating

The switch

In the eventuality of a switch from gas to hydrogen, the good news is that the UK has a history of successful fuel migration – having shifted from Towns gas to natural gas in the 1960’s. The energy infrastructure we already have in place can be adapted, and replacing natural gas with hydrogen would theoretically require no change to how we interact with our heating and cooking appliances.

In practice, installing a hydrogen boiler wouldn’t be too dissimilar to a gas boiler. The industry will do all it can to ensure vthat new boilers will be manufactured with ease of installation and best practice at the core.

The Importance of Annual Boiler Servicing

DTS Plumbing & Heating Sheffield reveal the benefits for Your Home and Wallet

Introduction:

Your boiler is the heart of your home, providing warmth and comfort throughout the year. Neglecting its annual service can have dire consequences, impacting its performance, compromising safety, and increasing energy expenses. This blog from DTS Plumbing & Heating Sheffield will explore the numerous benefits of scheduling a yearly boiler service, highlighting how it can positively impact your home and save you money in the long run.

1. Lower Energy Costs:

Regular boiler servicing ensures that your appliance is running efficiently, leading to significant savings on energy costs over time. A well-maintained boiler by DTS Plumbing & Heating Sheffield can operate smoothly by preventing soot accumulation and other debris, reducing fuel consumption. This keeps your energy bills low and contributes to a greener environment.

2. Preserve Your Warranty:

It is essential to service your boiler annually with DTS Plumbing & Heating Sheffield to ensure your warranty is maintained, depriving you of the benefits that come with it. Most manufacturers require you to book a Gas Safe registered engineer annually to ensure the boiler’s optimal functioning. This proactive approach helps identify and resolve potential issues, preventing costly breakdowns and ensuring your warranty remains intact.

3. Prepare for Winter:

Having your gas boiler serviced by DTS Plumbing & Heating Sheffield before the colder months set in is highly recommended. Imagine turning on the heating at the beginning of autumn only to discover a faulty or wholly broken system. By scheduling an annual service, you can safeguard against such unpleasant surprises, ensuring a warm and cosy home throughout winter.

4. Ensure the Safety of Your Loved Ones:

The most significant advantage of annual boiler servicing by DTS Plumbing & Heating Sheffield is the peace of mind it brings by ensuring the safety of your home. A faulty boiler can pose serious risks, including fires and gas leaks. Additionally, it increases the likelihood of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, a silent and potentially fatal threat. By catching faults early on, regular servicing helps prevent the release of CO and enables you to recognize the symptoms of poisoning, potentially saving lives.

Conclusion:

Investing in an annual boiler service with DTS Plumbing & Heating Sheffield is a wise decision that yields numerous benefits for your home and wallet. From reducing energy costs and preserving your warranty to preparing for winter and ensuring the safety of your loved ones, regular servicing is essential. Pay attention to the significance of this simple maintenance task – it’s a small price to pay for the peace of mind and comfort it provides. Schedule your annual boiler service today and reap the rewards for years to come.

Supporting Local

Next Saturday will be Small Business Saturday. As a small, local business ourselves, we believe in supporting our fellow local businesses in whatever way we can. Therefore, for this month’s blog we have highlighted the different ways we support our fellow small businesses.

Supporting Local Businesses

Social media is becoming more and more of a part of everyone’s daily life. However the people who follow us and support us on these channels may not always be aware of the companies we collaborate with or recommend. Therefore, each month, we try and highlight a local business on our social media to share with our followers. This will always be someone that we have purchased from or used their service ourselves and will be based on our recommendations!

In addition, we also send out a monthly newsletter. This includes a local business spotlight; around 100-200 words on the business and what they do. This varies quite considerably and can be anything from fellow local tradespeople, restaurants, gyms, caterers, gift stores etc. We do this, not only to support our fellow local businesses but to help our customers purchase from reliable companies who have a similar ethos to ourselves.

As well as that, we work closely with a small number of local, bathroom fitting and kitchen fitting companies as well as emergency engineers who we recommend to our customers should we not offer the service which they require.

Supporting Local Charities

For several years, our chosen charity has been The Cathedral Archer Project. They are a small, local charity who support homeless and vulnerable adults from sleeping bag right through to employment. Over the last 3 years, we have supported them however we can, including serving breakfast, collecting donations, hosting coffee mornings, volunteering at events, serving soup at their annual carol service plus many more.

We have seen how tirelessly and enthusiastically the project works to keep the homeless and vulnerable safe around our city. They don’t just provide breakfast and lunch; there is a doctor and dentist that visit regularly, they provide clubs and activities as well as acting as a fixed address to allow people who use the service to do the things we take for granted, such as open a bank account.

Our Favourite Quote

We thought we would leave you with our favourite small business quote that always makes us smile.

“When you buy from a small business an actual person does a little happy dance”

If you would like to know more about how we support local causes subscribe to our monthly newsletter…………..

As always, thank you for reading.  Stay safe!

Is Your Heating Winter Ready?

Your boiler may be working, but is your central heating system truly winter ready? This blog will detail our 10 step check that we carry out to make sure it is! The winter ready check also includes a boiler service.

Step 1 – Boiler Safety

This step checks whether your boiler is operating safely and not leaking any harmful gasses into your property. This is the most crucial point as it will make sure that you and your family are protected. At this stage, we will also check carbon monoxide alarms if you have any!

Step 2 – Boiler Performance

At this stage, we would carry out checks to ensure that the boiler is performing as it should be. It may seem like it is working to the naked eye. However when it come to winter the last thing you want is to be left with no heating or hot water!

Step 3 – Boiler Efficiency

When it comes to boiler efficiency, we would ensure that you are getting the best out of your boiler and the settings are at optimum levels for efficiency. This will mean that the boiler isn’t working overtime to produce heating and hot water. This will essentially save you money!

Step 4 – Filters

When installing boilers, we ensure that they are all fitted with a magnetic filter to catch sediment and magnetite from the system. However, that isn’t always the case. If no magnetic filter is installed, we would advise that one would be fitted. If there is a filter fitted, we would ensure that it is cleaned and in good working order. A filter plays a big part in the protection of your boiler.

Step 5 – Controls

During our check, we will also ensure that your controls are connected to your boiler and set correctly so that your heating is coming on when it needs. We will also be happy to explain the way that a thermostat works to ensure you aren’t spending money on heating bills that you don’t need to!

Step 6 – Condensate Pipe

During “The Big Freeze” a couple of years ago, a number of condensate pipes were frozen and locked out the boiler. Until an engineer came, a number of households were without heating and hot water. We check to ensure that the condensate pipe is exiting the wall at the correct size and that it is insulated to a standard that will prevent freezing!

Step 7 – Radiators

At this stage, we will check that all radiators in the household are getting hot. We will also check that all radiator valves are working.

Step 8 – External pipework

Visible pipework throughout the property will be checked to ensure that it is in good condition and not damaged. We will also advise on any pipework external to the property and how to prevent freezing!

Step 9 – Water Quality

As we have mentioned on previous blogs, water quality is vital to the health of the boiler and central heating. At this stage of the check, we would take a small sample of the water and check the quality and colouring. Our engineers will show you the results and let you check to see if you can see the target in their testing equipment!

Step 10 – Stop tap

Finally, we will check to make sure that your stop tap is operating correctly so that when turned off, all of the water to the property goes off. We will also ensure it is in good working order should an emergency arise.

If you would like any further information or to book in your winter ready check, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

As always, thank you for reading.  Stay safe!

Saving you Money on Gas and Water Bills!

In this blog, we have compiled some top tips for saving money on your gas and water bills. Some of our customers have reported that since we have done anything from fixing a dripping tap to installing a new boiler, they have seen a reduction in their bills.

3 steps to saving you money!

Check (your bills)
Switch (your energy provider)
Save (money)

How to Save Money on Gas Bills

  • By installing and correctly using a programmer, room thermostat and thermostatic valves (TRVs) on your radiators, you you could save up to £60 on your energy bills in a year! Some thermostats can be controlled by your phone, so turning the heating off has never been easier!
  • Make sure your heating programme is correct, so that it’s on when you need it and off when you’re out.
  • Similarly, be thermostat aware. If you need to turn the heating up you only need to turn it up by a couple of degrees. Hiking it up it won’t give you a short term boost of heat, it will start to heat your whole house to a tropical temperature
  • Higher bills can be caused by faulty or inefficient appliances. If in doubt arrange a gas safety check with a Gas Safe registered engineer. At DTS Plumbing, we can also advise on the efficiency of your boiler and approximately how much money a new one could save you.
  • If your bill has been estimated, be sure to read your meter and submit the actual reading to your supplier
  • Ask your gas engineer to check the levels of central heating protector in the system. If your central heating water is treated correctly, it not only improves energy efficiency, it also reduces fuel wastage and ensures system longevity. This in turn saves you money and reduces your carbon footprint.
  • Make sure your home is well insulated, including windows, doors and loft insulation. This will keep the house warmer, giving you less reason to hike up the heating!
  • The least common, but most dangerous reason would be a gas leak. If you smell gas turn off the gas supply, open your windows, leave the house if you can and call 0800 111 999 immediately.

How to Save Money on Water Bills

  • By taking a 5 minute shower instead of a bath you could save between 25 and 60 litres of water each time!
  • Fix dripping taps; a tap that’s dripping more than twice a minute can waste over 4 litres per week. After we replaced a dripping tap, one of our customers was thrilled to see the reduction in her water bill.
  • Install a water butt in your garden. Make the most of the British rain we have instead of using a hose pipe to water the plants!
  • If you’re thinking of replacing your toilet choose an ultra low flow one to reduce the amount of water in each flush. If you notice your toilet starting to run for longer or when it isn’t supposed to have them replaced!
  • Contrary to popular belief a dishwasher uses far less water than handwashing the same amount of dirty pots! Make sure you fill the dishwasher to its optimum amount to save the water running when it doesn’t need to. If you don’t have many pots to wash, many dishwashers have a “half load” setting.
  • Other smaller changes we would also recommend are: turn off the tap whilst cleaning your teeth and always use the most water efficient programme on your washing machine!

We hope these tips help to save money on your gas and water bills!

The Importance of a Boiler Service

According to Worcester Bosch, 25% of the UK population fail to have their boiler serviced every year. This blog will look into the importance of a boiler service. It will also cover how a boiler service can save you money and ensure you and your family are safe.

Saving you Money

A boiler service is a similar concept to a car MOT and ensures everything is running safely and efficiently. Whilst completing a boiler service, our engineer will test components of the boiler and highlight any parts that need maintenance. This will help to prevent them failing in the near future and therefore can prevent a costly repair.

Our engineers will also test the water has enough inhibitor. This protects the central heating system and helps to prevent any breakdowns due to untreated central heating water.

Efficiency

Having your boiler serviced every year will also mean that the efficiency of the boiler can be improved. Our engineers will fine tune the boiler wherever possible to ensure that it is running in the most efficient manner. When a DTS engineer comes to service the boiler, they will offer you advice on the efficiency of the boiler and recommendations on how to improve this.

Our engineer will also help you to set your thermostat to make sure that is at its most efficient setting. This will further save you money as the efficiency of the boiler and central heating can reduce the amount you spend on your gas bills.

Keeping you Safe

Although a boiler is, for most houses, the main source of heating and hot water it can also be extremely dangerous if not maintained correctly. By not having your boiler serviced, you risks a number of dangerous problems in your home. This includes carbon monoxide leaks, gas leaks and risk of damage to life or property from other products of combustion.

A boiler service will ensure that no harmful gasses are at risk of getting into your home. The engineer checking a number of things including the integrity of the boiler flue and the gas readings from the meter at specific points.

Boiler Warranty

If all of the reasons above weren’t enough, having your boiler service will also maintain the manufacturer’s warranty of your boiler. If the boiler breaks down whilst covered, the manufacturers representative tend to ask for service history. They may charge for the repairs if this cannot be produced. These can often be costly and can be avoided by having an annual service to ensure the warranty remains valid.

COVID-19 Update

Firstly, the team at DTS hope you are all safe and well during the COVID-19 pandemic. These are times that, although we are learning to adapt, are still very uncertain and no one knows what to expect.

Update on our Services

On March 23rd, the UK went into lockdown and we made the difficult decision to cancel all of our planned work for the safety of our team and our customers. We have continued to do emergency work throughout to ensure our customers were safe, warm and no damage came to their properties.

What seems like months later, we have decided that, following government advice, we are now beginning to book in all planned and non-emergency work. We have spent a lot of time discussing this with our team and we are confident we can put measures in place meaning that we can carry out all works without compromising the safety of our team or our customers, whilst still preventing the spreading of COVID-19.

Measures in Place

As mentioned above, we have put measures in place to ensure the safety of our customers and our team.

  • When we arrive, we will knock or ring the doorbell and take a step back to maintain a 2m distance when you answer the door.
  • We will maintain a 2m distance from you at all times and politely ask that you do the same.
  • When we enter the property, we ask for a clear path to the appliance/area we are working on to minimise contact inside your home.
  • We will wear a mask/face covering and gloves when inside your home.
  • When we have finished the job, we will wipe down surrounding surfaces wherever possible with anti-bacterial wipes.
  • If you are showing symptoms of COVID-19 we request that you contact us to rearrange your appointment. If the appointment is urgent, we will then put further measures in place to protect ourselves, our customers and prevent the spreading of COVID-19 .

Materials & Suppliers

Over this period of uncertainty, we are trying to work as normally as we can under the circumstances. However, some manufacturers shut their factories and production down for a number of weeks and some remain closed. This has therefore led to a backlog and shortage of some materials which means that they are taking longer to get to us, delaying our customers appointments. If this situation should arise, please bear with us. We will keep you informed every step of the way!

As always, thank you for your continued support and understanding. We are extremely grateful for all the well wishes we have received.

If you need us for anything or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Thanks,

Spring Clean at DTS

This blog is a brief update of what DTS have in store coming into spring!

DTS Plumbing are having a spring clean!

Spring has almost sprung (depending on which day you look outside)! What better to start the season than a revamp of our branding and services! This blog will keep you up to date on what we have planned for this season and some long-term plans.

New Branding

We have been working very closely with a local artist who has created numerous pictures to represent our business! Andy from Reyt Good Illustration has translated our core values into the artwork. We like to think they highlight that we are a local, family company who build relationships with our customers.

Over the coming months, we will be having some of the new images printed on to different items, just because we love them that much! Not only that, we are planning more images for seasonal events and updates!

On top of that, we have since been rated as one of the 3 best rated plumbers in Sheffield! This involves a 50 point inspection including ratings, trust, local reviews and customer satisfaction!

We are so proud to announce this, check it out on the link below!

New Services

More exciting things are coming to DTS! Most of our customers know that we specialise in boiler installation and maintenance, which means keeping our customers warm. However, we have been looking into other heat sources and are happy to announce that we will soon be offering Air Conditioning! We know Britain only gets the odd sunny day throughout the year so although we may be wishing for a heatwave, there are many more benefits.

Air conditioning provides both hot and cold air in places which are usually difficult to heat or keep cool. These may be rooms such as conservatories, orangeries, single-storey extensions plus many more. However, they can be fitted throughout the house. Our official training will be in April, however if you have any questions in the meantime don’t hesitate to ask.

0% Finance

If you are thinking of a new boiler or are having problems with your current boiler and want to spread the cost of a new one, fear not! We are now offering 0% finance on all Worcester Bosch boiler installations for up to 10 months. On top of that, Worcester Bosch offer a warranty up to 12 years, giving you peace of mind for the next decade!

For more information, get in touch via the website, email or give us a call. We would be happy to discuss the different options with you!

Changes to Service Plans

Currently, we offer 3 bands of service plan which are designed to be great value and maximise savings! Our service plans are becoming increasingly popular with customers both new and existing! Therefore, we wanted to offer the best value for money.

Therefore, we will be adding a Trade Database. This will be recommended trades we work closely with who we feel have a similar ethos and focus as us.

Not only that, we are currently developing an Exclusive Club which will be a range of local businesses offering a discount or giveaway for our service plan customers. This will have a range of businesses from things for the home, financial services and many more. This will be included within all service plans and will have no extra charge! If there any particular businesses you would like to see in there, please don’t hesitate to let us know!

Combi Boilers vs Regular Boilers

When buying a new boiler, it is a bit of a minefield! We have done blogs on when to consider a new boiler and what to look for from your boiler installer. To follow on, we have put together a blog on the different types of boilers to enable you to decide which is best for you. This may be a combi boiler or regular boiler.

Combi Boilers

Traditionally, combination boilers entered the market as a boiler for a one bathroom property. As always, technology has advanced and this isn’t necessarily the case in present times. However, some people think that combi boilers are a “one-stop shop” and are a solution to all problems.

One of the main reasons combi boilers can be a great addition is they save a considerable amount of space. They combine a central heating boiler and a water heater into one unit, allowing you to get rid of any hot water cylinders or tanks. This means you can have a combi boiler installed in almost any place in your home!

A combi boiler also heats your water on demand. So, when you are wanting a nice hot shower you don’t have to wait for the water to heat up. And, if you are the last one to have a shower, it means it wont have gone cold!

Not only do you get hot water on demand, the hot water from your taps and shower come through at mains level power. This means the mains pressure of the water tends to be a lot higher. Therefore if you like a more powerful shower, you are more likely to reap the benefits!

There are, however a few limitations on combi boilers. For example, combi boilers do not contain or use an immersion heater. Therefore if your boiler breaks down there is no back up for hot water (aside from an electric shower). Meaning that until you can get the boiler fixed, there would be no heating or hot water throughout the house.

Although the combi boiler offers a more high pressured shower, this is only if no other water sources running. If more than one water outlet be running at once, the water pressure will be significantly reduced. This is because the hot water is feeding more than one outlet.

Regular Boilers

Regular/Traditional boilers are a trio of a boiler, hot water cylinder and at least one water storage tank located in the loft. The regular boiler is a good solution to older properties with an older radiator system as these systems sometimes struggle to cope with the pressure from combi boilers.

Regular boilers are great for large properties where a lot of hot water is used at the same time, usually through multiple bathrooms. This means that the kids aren’t arguing over the water pressure when they are both having a shower or the pots can be washed at the same time as running a bath!

As mentioned above, if a combi boiler breaks down, you are left without heating and hot water. However, if a traditional boiler set up has an immersion heater installed to the hot water cylinder, you can still get hot water if the boiler breaks down!

As most things do, the regular boiler also has its drawbacks. The set up of regular boiler requires a large amount of loft space and an airing cupboard to house the tanks and the cylinder. Therefore, a regular boiler isn’t ideal for smaller properties or properties with a small amount of loft space.

On top of that, the hot water isn’t instant. Once all of the hot water from the cylinder has been used, the water will have to warm up again before you can use it. Not ideal in the winter when you are waiting for a warm bath.
