1. Turn the Heating Off… But Don’t Ignore the Boiler
Just because the radiators are having a rest doesn’t mean your boiler is.
It’s still working away to provide hot water for showers, washing up, and the occasional “I’ll just rinse this quickly” that turns into a full kitchen deep clean.
If something’s not quite right, spring gives you the breathing space to deal with it properly — rather than discovering a fault on the coldest day of the year.
2. Check the Boiler Pressure
Take a quick look at the pressure gauge on the front of your boiler.
In most homes, it should sit between 1 and 2 bar when cold.
If it’s:
- Sitting too low
- Dropping regularly
- Or needing frequent topping up
That’s worth investigating now while there’s no pressure (excuse the pun) from freezing temperatures.
Small issues in spring are far easier to sort than emergency breakdowns in January.
3. Listen Out for Anything Odd
Spring is quieter for heating systems, which makes it much easier to spot strange noises.
Keep an ear out for:
- Banging
- Gurgling
- Whistling
- Vibrations
These can point to trapped air, pressure problems, or components starting to wear.
The good news? Faults caught early are usually quicker and cheaper to fix.
4. Give the Boiler Cupboard a Clear-Out
Be honest… over winter, that boiler cupboard probably became a bit of a storage unit.
Coats. Cleaning products. Random DIY bits. A bag you haven’t used since 2019.
Spring is the perfect time to clear it out and make sure:
- There’s good airflow around the boiler
- Nothing is resting against pipework
- No flammable items are stored nearby
